Q. How do comedians start their career and how much do they get per gig? Any information is helpful.

A. they get paid all different amounts and you start out with open mike nights (no pay) and hope you become good enough after doing a few hundred free shows that someone will start paying you $10 for 10 minutes at 2am. no guarantee you will ever make enough for it to be worthwhile and expect many many years of late night shows in front of a dozen drunks

Are there any male comedians today that are talented enough to get through their stand-up routine?
Q. without female-bashing jokes? And the same goes for female comedians, although there are a lot fewer female comedians than males. You would think the shear number of male comedians that flood the market would produce one or two who are able to write enough material to not have to fill it with other people's cliches.

Why do modern comedians feel the need to shout so loudly?
Q. I'm watching Live At The Apollo on telly, and some Welsh comedian (don't know his name) is performing. He is shouting so loudly and hoarsely that I'm getting a headache, and have no idea whether what he's saying is actually funny or not. I have noticed that a lot of modern comedians do this - Michael Mcintyre would be another example. I just can't listen to them. Is their shouting supposed to be the funny part of their acts or what?

Is it true that comedians tend to be serious in person?
Q. I'm just wondering. I've heard rumors that comedic actors, stand-up comedians, and other such "funny guys" tend to actually be very serious about their jobs and very serious in general when you meet them/speak to them in person. Does anyone know if there is any truth to this?

A. Recent American history bears this out. Jackie Gleason, Zero Mostel, Lucille Ball, Danny Thomas, Dean Martin, Jerry Lewis, Madeline Kahn, Robin Williams, Billy Crystal, John Candy, John Belushi, the list goes on, all of these people are known to have battled personal demons and for having, personally, serious views of life. It seems that to achieve being able to view life as absurd, and therefore funny, one has to see it as it really is, which is suffering. Like everything in the arts, however, it's all subjective.

A. And they should have mentioned Bi-Polar. The comedy part is a well rehearsed act brought about by life experiences. Almost like an addiction, to laugh makes you feel better, when in reality their emotional life is out of control.

What is the difference between remarks by Dan Imus, and comedians such as Chris Rock?
Q. Some comedians such as have made their careers out disparaging racial remarks against a certain target, and political leaders have done absolutely no less. In all these years, you haven't seen the main targets of such remarks trying to boycott them or censured them. But if anyone from that targeted group even implies anything in kind, they are automatically labeled as racist and call for the severest punishments possible. Can anyone with a TRUE open mind, see the hypocrisy in this? This is AMERICA. Why should one group be allowed to say anything they want no matter how derrogatory, but another group has to walk on eggshells? This certain group has claimed that they want equality, but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize… [cont.]

A. there is no justification for inflammatory speech by anyone. the whole intent of that type of rhetoric is to stir up the fire. what all too many expect is that they can say anything and there will be no consequences. people who willingly run their mouths and spew filth, racial hatred or malign others are their own worst enemy and they alienate the people who support them, they alienate advertisers and they alienate mainstream Americans. it doesn't matter what race, creed or color a person is - saying tacky things about other people is still WRONG.
