What comedies have the most sophisticated humor, and which ones have the most random humor?
Q. How do you feel about comedy shows that have random and nonsensical humor?
Asked by Nero T. Pickle - Thu Sep 17 11:12:31 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Big Bang Theory has a oddly inflated sense of humor. You have to have knowledge of pop culture, as well as stereotypes, and even basic scientific conceptualization. Frasier had a great sophisticated humor. Again very well rounded with cultural references, stereotypes, laced with high brow humor. Rosanne was always a random humor type of show for me. Never sure if the physical humor, familial jabs, or some other wacky joke was going to bring me to my knees in hysterical humor. I think The Simpsons were also like that as well as Family Guy. Stewie makes jokes that hit me a few minutes later and leave me going, 'oh man did he really just do that?'. But sometimes I'm sitting there going, 'did they really need that?'.

Sense of humor, I guess I have a very sick and twisted one. How do I develop my sense of humor?
Q. I am 19 sophmore in college, and realized my sense of humor is not that great. Like people say jokes and everyone laughes but I just don't get it. And sometimes I just cannot think of funny things to say or how to react to things other people think is funny.

A. Make a mental copy of the jokes you read in YA and when you are with your friends in (real life) paste them into any situation you see fit. By the time you hit Senior year I'm sure you will have improved. I think it works like alcoholism, the first step is admitting that you have a problem, I'm proud of you little Ran for stepping out of denial.

A. Adviser: the comic adviser gives uncalled for advice in a Punch prototype. Ex: Advice to people who want to buy a puppy: Don't. Anecdotes: any interesting event, either having to do with a celebrity or something smaller, that helps the humorist make a point. Anecdotes are great for the speaker and writer. Aside: a thought added as if something the speaker was saying reminded him of it. Banter: good-natured teasing back and forth; exchange of witty remarks. Blendword: blending two or three words to make a new word. Ex: smog for smoke and fog. Blue Humor: not appropriate for the public speaker. Humor based on easily offensive subjects like making love, body parts, and bodily functions. Blunder: wit based on a person who makes a… [cont.]

Do you find humor in putting a wine bottle in a much larger box as a prank in a yankee swap party?
Q. I will be participating in a Yankee swap party tomorrow, the people here fancy liquor and I wanted to be creative by putting a $20-30 dollar bottle of wine in a much larger box to make it seem like something it is not, as a prank. Would you find humor in this? Much thanks and happy holidays.

A. That's kind of the point of a Yankee swap party isn't it---I take that to mean what an American calls a white elephant. Best of luck, I've seen quite a few people that do a framed picture of themself, with a gift card hidden behind it.

What is the best way to add to your sense of humor?
Q. Are there certain websites you visit often - certain magazines you read that add to your sense of humor (good for conversation subjects)? Other sources you check out? Or - what do you do to improve it based on your experience. :) I have a good sense of humor - just looking for ways to take advantage of it.

A. Learn to laugh at yourself. There's a ton of material there, yet most people never tap into it. As an ice breaker, self-effacing humor is the best for putting people at ease around you. The impression is that you are honest, intelligent, and humble. In other words...interesting.

How can you regain sense of humor and ability to be outwardly warm/expressive after a trauma?
Q. I suffer from post traumatic stress and social anxiety. What can I do to regain my sense of humor and feel comfortable expressing myself outwardly? It feels like I haven't laughed properly for years and I have difficulty making friends because I'm so shy, withdrawn and emotionally 'shut down'. I feel I can't connect with people. :(

A. Time. The only cure is time. But remember that any day you can open your eyes is a good day. Take baby steps. Go to a park or a beach when no one is around. Enjoy the sensations of nature. If you can manage it, go get a massage. Ask the massuese not to talk and just relax and feel the massage as something meant to feel good. Always remember that the possibility of getting back to normal is there, so just have patience and persistance. Take care.

Do you think a sense of humor is spiritually important, detrimental or neutral?
Q. I was just told that the Bible contains to reference to humor because it is not a joke book. But it is, I thought, a book about spirituality - it talks about love, hate, good sex, bad sex, incest (good and bad apparently), sacrifice, torture, kindness, cruelty, idealism, etc. Why wouldn't it tell us what place humor has in our spiritual growth? Seriously.

A. Just remember not to take everything so serious. Listen to people carefully but understand that somethings maybe to make people laugh and not to be hurtful or mean. You'll get the hang of it soon enough. Try watching some sitcoms. They always have some funny situations in them or try to see the funny side of them. I know with my anxiety and stuff it has been hard for me to laugh with people. Sometimes you just don't want to hear it. So take your time and listen. Keep a smile on your face. You'll make plenty of friends in collage, some you can even share some of your past with. I'm sure once you get to know them you'll fit right in. Take and never give up!

Why do people have such different senses of humor?
Q. I've noticed that a ton of things I find hilarious (to the point where I laugh hysterically), other people don't even find funny. And I don't have an immature sense of humor. Socially speaking though, why do people have different senses of humor? The way they were brought up? Life experiences? For example, I have a smart humor, and find Spongebob and Family Guy hilarious, not only for the intended jokes, but just the whole situation. It's funny to think there's even a situation with all of the characters from Spongebob - you can look at it from two levels - the whole situation, or the intended jokes. I laugh at both, but some people don't understand the situational humor and just the intended jokes, whereas other people like my dad… [cont.]

A. Well, I have a very dark sense of humor. I'm always laughing in the theater when everyone is dead silent. Can't think of an example right now, but it's like laughing when a character in a movie dies tragically and at other, wildly inappropriate times.

A. I'm not a scientist, so for questions like this I like the WNYC Radio Lab podcast because they do a good job of synthesizing difficult scientific questions in an entertaining and educational way. They've looked at laughter (which is related to but still separate from humor). In the process, they talk to scientists and refer to their work, so it's a good way to find actual scientists who are working on questions you're interested in: Laughter: Is it just a human thing? They mention a book about Laughter: Laughter: A Scientific Investigation Hope this is helpful.

Asked by Ace - Sat Feb 21 23:35:43 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. When you are a writer, if you want to make your stories funny, you must have suffered through sorrow. This is how Harry Potter has its laugh-out-loud moments. Fiction is a way to convey truth about human nature, and is much more full of truth than history books. History is FACTS, not TRUTH. Therefore, the phrase, "Truth is stranger than fiction," makes no sense taken at face value.
